This samba is dedicated to Jõao Donato, the great Brazilian jazz samba latin pianist who was kind enough to allow me to interview him for the book Brazilian Piano: Choro, Samba, and Bossa Nova (Hal Leonard, 2010). This version was performed by Jazz Combo III at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
lyrics
“If you just play a lot of notes, but it doesn’t make you feel good, it’s not good playing, it’s just a lot of notes. Playing good means playing just enough to make me feel happy.”
—João Donato
